New Case Study - Adapt or Die: How EuroCycle Is Scaling Online 50-State Sales With Ekho

For dealers

How to sell vehicles out of state online

The buyers are already there. Out-of-market shoppers find your inventory, ask about it, and then stall at the point where the deal has to be finished on paper in a building they cannot reach.

Nothing about the sale itself is unusual. Five things have to work remotely, and each of them is a paperwork problem rather than a legal one.

What an out-of-state sale actually requires

  1. Register the vehicle in the buyer’s state, not yours

This is the part that stops most out-of-state deals. Every state sets its own tax basis, its own title paperwork and its own registration filings, and getting one wrong turns a sold unit into an open ticket. Ekho processes titling and registration across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, for every titled vehicle type it supports, so your title clerk supervises exceptions rather than learning fifty rulebooks.

  2. Take the money remotely, and know that it cleared

A buyer four states away cannot hand over a cashier’s check. On orders where Ekho is the seller of record, buyers pay by expedited ACH in all 50 states, with same-day confirmation of funds, so the deal moves on a confirmed payment rather than a promise.

  3. Get the paperwork signed without the buyer in the building

Signing happens online, and signing links stay valid however long a signer takes, which matters when the buyer is in a different time zone and reads the packet after work. F&I and aftermarket coverage run in the same flow, in a set order of signature execution.

  4. Get plates on the vehicle

Temporary tags are processed as part of the same transaction, including off-road classifications. Buyers get tracking by email as soon as the temp tag ships, and the temp tag email spells out any follow-up steps they still need to take.

  5. Get the vehicle to them

Selling out of state does not mean sourcing and pricing transport yourself. Ekho dealers use a delivery partner network at rates negotiated for them.

Questions dealers ask

Yes. The transaction is generally treated as taking place at the dealership, and the buyer’s home state governs the tax basis, titling and registration. What varies is the paperwork, not the legality. The work is in filing each state’s documents correctly rather than in getting permission to sell.

Ekho handles the title work, registration filings and DMV submissions across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, so there is no third-party title service to contract separately. Your title clerk reviews exceptions instead of processing every packet.

Online, at their own pace. Signing links stay valid however long a signer takes, so a buyer who opens the packet a day later is not locked out and does not need the paperwork reissued.
